A silver commemorative coin dedicated to the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity in Alania
In 2012 the Central Bank of Russia was addressed by Taimuraz Mamsurov, Head of North Osetia, with a request to issue a commemorative silver coin dedicated to the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity in Alania with an image of one of architectural monuments located within the territory of the Republic.
Saint George’s Church located in the village of Dzyvgis was chosen of the Orthodox holy places and approved by the Archbishop of Vladikavkaz and Alania Zosima. The Bank of Russia answered the request of the Head of the Republic of North Osetia – Alania and issued such a coin in July 1, 2014.
The coin was issued within the framework of the “Architectural Monuments of Russia” series. The honorary mission of minting the initiative commemorative coin was entrusted to the Saint-Petersburg Mint of Goznak. Artists of the Design Center of Goznak prepared the coin: Lidia Evdokimova developed the design, Alexander Bessonov modeled it.
The artist placed a relief image of the Church of Saint George the Victory Bringer, which is a unique Christian monument of medieval Osetia and an excellent masterpiece of city architecture on the mirror surface of the coin discus, against the background of mountains.
The first piece of the commemorative coin was given to the Head of the Republic of Alania. The coin was minted in the number of 5000 pieces, with the face value of 3 roubles of sterling silver in “proof” quality.
