“Works by Michelangelo Buonarroti”
The silver coin with the face value of 25 roubles belongs to the “Treasury of the World Culture”. The weight of the precious metal in purity is 31.1 g, it is made of sterling silver with the diameter of 39.0 mm. The manufacturing quality is “proof”.
In the center of the coin reverse, there are relief images of the Pieta sculpture. On the right, there is the front of Saint Peter’s Cathedral in Vatican in Rome. In the top of the discus, there are coloured images of the frescos of Sistine Chapel in Vatican. On the left, there is a fragment of the portrait of Michelangelo Buonarroti by Daniele da Volterra. There is an inscription “Works by Michelangelo Buonarroti” in a semi-circle in the top.
The laser matting technology (the portrait of Michelangelo), organic enamels (“Works by Michelangelo Buonarroti” inscription) and tampon printing technology (frescos) were applied in the coin production.
The author of the sketch was an artist of the Design Center of Goznak A.D. Schablykin, modelling was carried out by A.N. Bessonov.
The work upon the coin was a true professional pleasure for Anton Schablykin.
“Michelangelo Buonarroti was a personality of the world scale. There were very few of such masters in the art history. I haven’t been to Rome, and I haven’t had a chance to see Sistine Chapel or other works by Michelangelo with my own eyes. But this master is well-known to everyone engaged in fine arts since early years. Moreover, every time you come close to the personality of Michelangelo you find new and interesting things. An architect, a sculptor, a painter, a poet… A universal person and artist. His contemporaries called him “godlike”. I wanted to describe the artist through his works. But because the work upon a coin requires laconism and accuracy, it was necessary to choose the best-known and most significant one. The images of sculptures of the great artist were relief. The fresco was depicted in colour. The portrait of Michelangelo himself as if moved to the background somewhat. It was made with the help of the laser matting technology. We had to work hard for the laser engraving not to “disappear” or to “bulge” as a result. The artists of Goznak work in close contact with the production site.it is both our advantage and a great responsibility. Together with the technologists of the Mint, we can check any moment in the coin production process – starting with modelling and up to tampon printing or enamel application. By joint efforts, we strove to achieve the fulfillment of the idea, so that the work result corresponded to the sketch and our apprehension of the future coin. It seems that we’ve managed that this time”.
