The international jury has chosen the "450th Anniversary of Birth of Galileo Galilei" commemorative coin to be the Coin of the Year
The coin was minted at the Saint-Petersburg Mint of Goznak of sterling silver in “proof” quality. The technologies of organic enamel application, partial gilding, crystal inserts were used in its manufacture.
The coin face value is 25 roubles. The pure silver content is 155.5 g; the diameter is 60.00 mm. it was minted in the number of 150 pieces.
In the bottom part of the reverse there is a relief portrait of Galileo Galilei in front of the celestial globe with a telescope in his hand. In the middle ground, there are a coloured image of the starry heaven, and the scheme of the heliocentric system carried out using partial gilding and crystal inserts. Against their background there are the figures of three scientists and the inscription “GALILEO GALILEI” along the edge; on the left next to the edge there is an image of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, on the right there is an image of a celestial body.
The authors of the coin dedicated to Galoleo Galilei are A. Schablykin (an artist) and F. Andronov (a sculptor), employees of the Design Center of Goznak.
Another coin of the Bank of Russia, “The 250th Anniversary of the State Hermitage”, was the best in the Successful Artistic Solution category.
The craftsmen of the Saint-Petersburg Mint of Goznak struck the coin of sterling silver. The manufacturing quality is “proof”. The face value is 25 roubles. The pure silver content is 155.5 g, the diameter is 60.00 mm. The number is 1000 pieces.
Against the mirror surface of the coin reverse there is a group of buildings of the State Hermitage in Saint-Petersburg (viewed from above), on the left there is Alexander’s column and the front of the building of the General Headquarters, in the top there is a portrait of Catherine II in a circular medallion, to its left there is the Empress’s monogram and an inscription in two lines: “THE HERMITAGE 250”, and a floral ornament across the disc.
The authors of the coin design are A. Schablykin (an artist) and F. Andronov (a sculptor).
Four other Russian coins participating in the competition were highly appreciated by the jury. The “Russian Sportsmen – Champions and Awardees of the Olympic Games in London” commemorative coin occupied the second position in the Unique Artistic Solution category; it was produced by the craftsmen of the Moscow Mint of Goznak.
Another coin minted at the Moscow Mint, “The History Museum”, occupied the third position in the Coin Classics category.
The third position of the Silver Coin of the Year category was given to the “Senate Palace of the Moscow Kremlin” commemorative coin struck at the Saint-Petersburg Mint of Goznak.
The “200th Anniversary of Victory of the Russian Navy in the Gangut Battle” commemorative coin produced at the Moscow Mint of Goznak was the third awardee in the Gold Coin of the Year category.
The coin which had collected the majority of votes of the participants of the preferential voting at the numismatic portal www.Gold10.ru received the People’s Choice Award.
The results of “Coin Constellation-2015” were summed up at the solemn ceremony that took place on June 25, 2015 within the framework of the Sixth International Coin Conference and Exhibition COINS-2015, the only international coin forum in Russia. Well-known mints of the world, national and commercial banks, leading coin distributing companies have traditionally participated in it.
More than 240 coins and 23 coin series issued since January 1 until December 31, 2014 were presented to the evaluation of the international jury. It consists of experts from famous world museums and auction houses, representatives of coin distributing companies, numismatic associations and specialized professional editions.
45 participants from 29 countries submitted their applications. Including coins presented by banks, mints and distributing companies from France, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Australia, Portugal, Israel, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Canada, Kazakhstan, Mexico, the USA, Finland, Kirgizia, Belarus, Transdniestria, Armenia, Iran, Czechia, the Republic of South Africa also participated in the competition.
